You can give blood if you are at least 16 years old (there is no upper age limit), weigh a minimum of 110 pounds and are in good health.
You may be temporarily or permanently deferred because of health conditions, medications or environmental restrictions. Check Eligibility for more information.
When you donate blood either in the donor center or on our bloodmobile at a mobile blood drive, you will go through the following procedures. The whole process takes 45 – 60 minutes.
- Donor ID Requirements Implemented on February 1, 2008
- Registering:
- Present a valid photo ID or LBC donor card every time you register to donate and complete a health history questionnaire that includes questions about past illnesses and medications.
- Health Screening:
- A nurse will review the health history questionnaire with you, check your temperature, iron level, blood pressure and pulse.
- Donating:
- Your actual donation will last 8-10 minutes. A nurse will monitor you at all times while you are in the donor chair.
- Relaxing:
- You will be asked to spend 10-15 minutes in the canteen or registration area on a mobile event while enjoying snacks and juice.
- Frequency:
- You may donate whole blood once every 56 days. This is to allow your body to recover completely including rebuilding your iron level.
- Safety:

You cannot contract ANY disease from donating blood. All supplies used are sterile and used only once.
Your blood donation will be tested for various infectious agents, including HIV and hepatitis. This testing is done to ensure the safety of the blood supply. Any blood testing positive will not be used for transfusion.
Please do not attempt to donate for the sole purpose of having your blood tested for HIV or other infectious agents. These tests can be done at other Lane County facilities. Click here for HIV Testing Facilities and additional information.
